Orange dément brider l’accès au site Megaupload
Depuis la mise en œuvre de la loi Hadopi, des sites comme Megaupload et Megavideo, qui proposent du téléchargement et du streaming, ont la faveur des internautes. Mais leur accès ne se fait pas toujours dans de bonnes conditions. Les abonnés d'Orange qui se sont connectés à ces deux sites entre le 12 janvier à 18 heures et le 13 janvier jusqu’à 5 heures du matin, ont eu la surprise de voir un pop-up s’afficher sur leur écran.
Sous le titre « Alerte de connectivité », celui-ci avertissait les utilisateurs que, s’ils trouvaient les téléchargements lents et la lecture de vidéo hésitante, c’est probablement parce que leur FAI restreignait intentionnellement l’accès au site. « Nos statistiques de réclamations indiquent que la plupart des utilisateurs qui ont ce problème ont accès à l’Internet via France Télécom, souvent sous la marque Orange. »

The American computer giant IBM has come under pressure from local politicians over a potential relocation of its French operation from La Gaude to Sophia Antipolis.
Six regional councilors have joined the mayor of La Gaude, Michel Meïni in launching an online petition against the move. The men will also send a copy of the appeal to the French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
IBM have been based at its current site for over 50 years, but the software firm is anxious to move thanks to concerns over the rising cost of the lease on their 35,000 square metre site.
UMP representative for the Alpes-Maritimes’ sixth district, Lionnel Luca also expressed his support for the protest to keep IBM where it is. "The fact that the IBM management is considering relocating to Sophia Antipolis for financial reasons means that anything is possible. We may even see the end of IBM’s presence in the region in years to come. We have the best interests of the site’s 600 employees at heart."

Luca, suggested that the influence of the Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, who is a former minister of industry in Nicolas Sarkozy’s government, may help to keep the company in La Gaude.

Alcatel Bribes for Kenya, Nigeria, Angola, Ivory Coast, Uganda and Mali 
Admission by Alcatel-Lucent of improper payments to obtain telecom contracts in six African countries has shown that corruption in the region’s telecom sector is still rife despite targeted efforts to punish companies and government officials involved in the practice.
The company used third parties in Kenya, Nigeria, Angola, Ivory Coast, Uganda and Mali who acted as conduits for bribing customers and officials in order to obtain telecom contracts. Alcatel S.A. and three of its subsidiaries have agreed to pay a combined US$92 million penalty to resolve a Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) led by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations into the worldwide sales practices of Alcatel S.A. prior to its 2006 merger with Lucent Technologies to form Alcatel-Lucent.
“For a long time now, it’s really been difficulty to understand how Alcatel has been able to get many contracts in Africa including supply contracts for undersea cables. Now it’s clear,” said Amos Kalunga, a telecom analyst from the Computer Society of Zambia.

Prime minister Raila Odinga has departed for Ivory coast to undertake his role as African union special envoy to resolve the political stalemate in the West African country.
Raila who earlier had called for the use of force to remove incumbent Laurent Gbagbo seems to have toned down on this position and now says he is going to Ivory Coast as a neutral broker seeking a peaceful solution.
